Comoros

The Union of Comoros is committed to the regional initiative that brings together Madagascar, South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania and the Comoros in the African Coelacanth Ecosystem Programme.

We believe that the use of the coelacanth as an icon to build and share knowledge regionally in southern and eastern Africa, should ensure that wise collective management of marine resources leads to sustainability and an improved quality of life for all.

Through capacity building by education, training, networking, sharing of ideas, improved facilities and the development of secure funding for the institutions’ research and conservation programmes, it is anticipated that contributions towards poverty alleviation will materialise.

The African Coelacanth Ecosystem Programme is a framework that follows the NEPAD principles of defining our goals ourselves as a prerequisite for cooperation with international institutions working in our field of interest.

The Comoros wishes to contribute highly to this programme with its experience in co-management of natural resources and with its unique coelacanth biotope that provides relevant information for coelacanth research and conservation.

The Comoros consider the coelacanth as a flagship species that should contribute to development of the archipelago and enhance the establishment of facilities for research and conservation of the coelacanth and its coastal environment.
